These spheres are solid and are purely decorative. Varying in size up to about 3″, people find them pleasing to hold.  Various decorative treatments make them interesting conversation pieces when a few are kept in a bowl on the coffee table.

Spheres can be an interesting challenge for a woodturner.  How to turn a perfect sphere (or as close as possible) from a rectangular block of wood and how to get the last little nubs off are the two primary issues.

There are assorted jigs available commercially, all of which I’ve viewed with desire.  I’ve also toyed with the idea of making my own. But for the moment I am just turning these spheres freehand which takes more time but is satisfying.
